An example of how important it is to make sure you are using the right phrases on twitter. Think about it, would you go up to someone at a networking event with your business card in hand and say, “please connect with me”. If you want to make a difference at a networking event, show excitement about their product, service or give the person some type of accolades for being a great person.

“please follow me on twitter” – Look at all of the spammy people who are desperate for connections. Would you really connect with these people. Have you ever typed this phrase on Twitter. It is very scary! This is how people may perceive you.
“You Rock” -Look at the users who echo these words. They genuinely give people props for their posts and other types of action. The quality people on Twitter know this and you should too.
My point here is that it is always a good idea to take the focus off trying to build new followers and putting the emphasis on encouraging and complimenting others. Focus on other people more than yourself. Also, for action-related tweets, direct people to your site and ask for comments.
