These are very common questions that maybe you ask yourself each day or you have asked others and received similar answers or different answers. I can only speak based on my experience.
I want to really focus on the “**” items in this post. The first three really are up to you. I can’t tell you that twitter is worth the effort. I don’t know what type of effort you are putting into it. I don’t spend every hour of the day on twitter. Some people can, I have other work and marketing channels to work with. The best time to get on twitter is something you have to discover based on your work schedule, the people you are trying to reach out to and basically what works best for you.
(Disclaimer: I’m assuming you have worked with twitter in the past. If you have not, you need to leave and go read up on Twitter on the Twitter Business site)
**Being more effective on twitter – Twitter is a communication channel. You have to constantly think of ways to reach your audience. Sometimes you might want to post a broad message to everyone, or sometimes you can limit your discussion through the use of hashtags regarding particular subjects. Better yet, Call people out directly, once you have gotten to know them a little bit. This last statement is really the key to being effective. Once you can get a dialogue started with clients on twitter, you are starting to build your personal or company brand on twitter and you will find that these friends will be your strongest advocates going forward. It’s all about connecting with the right people.
**Twitter – one of the best platforms to work with – Yes, Yes, Yes! Where else can you post a message and receive instant feedback? Obviously, other social media platforms, but Twitter is great for this. In addition with Twitter lists, you get to control the flow of communication based on your definition. It is a wonderful platform which allows you to be involved at any time and get your message across to people or reply to someone else. It is the ongoing 24-hour networking place to be. Your job is to find the right people, and to stay engaged so people know about you and can find you as a “Resource” It is the starting place for great conversation and connection, not the ending place.
**Twitter – Broadcasting or Engaging – It is both period! I get tired of people who say you must only engage to be effective or that broadcasting is wrong. Twitter is a place for sharing! We need some broadcasting. Twitter has been a place where breaking news has been reported first. That is a good thing. Engaging is also very important. You can’t just broadcast and not know anyone. Twitter is about people. People have to know who you are and what you stand for. If you just post links all day and don’t reply or talk to anyone, what have you gained?
**Twitter and Followers – You need to connect and build your follower numbers. I think you need to get to 1,000 quality followers at a minimum to be effective. This takes time. You see people with huge follower counts 20,000 or 50,000. How many of those are really good quality contacts. Do you tell your existing customers that you have over 500,000 people following your company? You would sound stupid. Don’t focus on numbers, focus on quality contacts. These people are your advocates.
I hope I have given you a little twitter perspective today from my perspective as a Marketing Director. . I know others of you answer questions like this on a regular basis, if you have a great tip or best practice please share.
