Social Media has really taken off in the last five years. Acceptance is gaining daily. Before social media, it was search that gained steam. Remember the late 1990’s when there where search engines like AltaVista, Webcrawler and Excite. These search engines later evolved and some others moved ahead of the pack like Google, Yahoo and Bing.
Search cannot be ignored. People still use search to locate particular information. I think this is evolving into a best-of-the-best where the best social media platforms and search engines are coming together. Here is my review of the current social media platforms and their accompanying search engines.
GRADE = A
Google took awhile to incorporate search and social, but Google+ is making some strong inroads and people who actively communicate and connect on Google+ are seeing search results and understand that search will be very important going forward.
Also, you will start to see correlations between your Google+ activity and your ranking on Google Search.
Twitter has a great search utility. If you haven’t done this yet, try this, bookmark Twitter’s Advanced Search Page. This search page is very powerful and you can find great content from posts submitted on twitter.
GRADE = B
This platform has a little, secret search function that may get more attention in the future. In the upper right hand, users are encouraged to search for people, companies and groups. …….Here is the secret….. Try typing a key word in for the people search like (social media – no parenthesis) – the outcome will be a list of people who have a strong background in this area. This type of search can be very useful in locating a particular niche of people.
The only reason, I have this platform rated as a C is because I came across this type of search by accident and I am not sure if I am really getting the best results. I think Linkedin will promote their search more in the future and if they do, you can bet that more people will migrate to this platform. ….Check out the Search Secret on this site and let me know what you think.
