Being effective online really starts with your brand. However, the notion of a brand is becoming fuzzy. Some people feel that by showing their picture and putting the company name in their profile gives them the right to speak for the company. Others, have a company profile, but never tell you who the real voice is behind the company brand name. Awhile back, I wrote a post about the CEO being the face of the company on Social Media or a person in upper management. I still believe this is the best approach, but I understand how difficult it is for a CEO to also be active on Social Media. It takes a special person.
As I was writing this post, several questions came to mind. Maybe you can relate.
- Should I have a personal picture or a company picture?
- Should I give out my phone number or email in my profile?
- Answer: Yes if you want people to follow up with you.
- Should I stuff my profile with key words?
- Answer: Don’t go overboard here. Express yourself in complete thoughts, not a list of words.
Think of your profile as a 5-SECOND LANDING PAGE. You really only have a few seconds to tell people about yourself and let them know how to get a hold of you. I believe it is a crucial step in creating stronger relationships with your followers and showing them more about who you are and how they can get a hold of you.
I have modified my profile countless times. Here is what I have found to be effective:
- Tell people what you do or occupation.
- Talk about a goal
- Be unique in some way
- Put some words in that you want people to associate you with.

- Who is the person behind the company?
- Contact information: email, phone number

Some other thoughts
I think this area will be extremely important. If you are on Google Plus and you have tied your profile in with your Google Plus ID, you know how valuable it is when people search for terms associated with your profile and your picture is shown in the search results. Google is trying to incorporate profiles into the overall search experience.
Most people do not connect with others who do not have a picture of themselves on Linkedin. Look at your profile and update it with key words for searchability and make sure you put your contact information in your profile somewhere towards the top.
Take your profile seriously and make sure you have provided people enough information for them to know you and to make contact with you.
