My two sons and I had a discussion over the weekend. Both of them are in high school and have a routine of weights in the morning and then basketball drills or summer league games. We had the discussion about whether work in the summer should be thought of as “work” or fun. Their coach stresses that making their routine fun will help them stay motivated as opposed to constantly thinking about it as work. The key is to get into a routine. Both of my sons have seen results in their strength and skill development. In addition, they feed off each other and push each other. Both would agree that summer conditioning is fun!
With social media, the biggest part of being successful is making it a routine. You have to work at it everyday. If you do, you will see results down the road. If you don’t have a routine, start asking people how they use these tools. Until you get yourself into a daily routine, you really can’t expect to see any results in the very near future.
Find your customers
You have to find your customers for your products and services online. If you look hard enough they are out there. Here are some suggestions:
To find clients try the following:
Key word searches on twitter for your products.
Search for conferences and see what hashtag they are using. This is great for niche markets
Search for particular hashtags and look at people to see if there might be a fit.
Find some key friends who are also in the business of marketing on twitter.
Just like my sons who work together and share similar training, they are in different grades, but they can talk to each other and bounce ideas off of each other. You need these type of people. Some may be mentors and others maybe “just friends” In any case, you need to always be on the lookout for some great people to network with.
Start tracking something.
Number of tweets or posts per day, per week, per month.
Any increase in links to site, emails, phone calls?
Again, some metrics are better than none. In time, you will refine your metrics and they will become bettter indicators of your success.
Finally, Have Fun!
Remember, you need to action in order to succeed on social media platforms. It’s all about taking action. Having a routine helps immensely. Once you get into it and learn more of the ins-and-outs you will have more fun and start seeing value.
