I attended a church meeting with leaders from different groups at the church and several people indicated that we needed to reach more people by posting information on Facebook Pages and tweeting out information about events to reach people.
The discussion was actually making me a little sick by the end of the evening.
To me, the pieces that are missing are the following:
You need to tell your story! – People need to do a better job of telling others what they do. We all need to work on this whether we are a business, a church group or an organization. You need to get the word out about what your group stands for, what it is currently doing and the names of people who are doing this type of work.
Know your audience and Create an Audience! – If you plan on using a platform like Facebook, make sure all the members of your team are on board and are a part of your group page. It takes time to build an audience and the best audience can start with the members of the group.
You need to have a core group that can spread your message! – I am learning quickly that more people need to be a part of your team. This isn’t a one-person show. Each group needs to make it a priority and the members of the group or business need to come together to get the word out.
You need to communicate information on a regular basis! – Social Media is a communication channel that needs a human voice, it is not another bulletin board.
Social Media can enhance communication but you must have things in place in order to be effective. Social Media is not about communication. Social media is more than just moving the same text in a newsletter or a church bulletin to a Facebook Page or Tweet. If you plan on moving toward social media, make sure you have a solid team that is willing to dedicate time to make it work.
What else would you add? If you have used social media for your local group or organization, what successes or pitfalls did you run into?
