Ok – If you are a marketer, you have to read Brian Solis’s post from yesterday, “Social Media as the Next Web“. It is a great article and it really makes you think a lot. Especially if you are in planning mode for 2013.
So back to the question, which I received from this article that I can’t stop thinking about. Is social media more about destination or experience? See my answer below
Social Media – Destination
For me the destination will always be my website, blog site, etc. I don’t want the destination to be a Facebook Company Page or Linkedin Profile or Company Page. The only way to stand out, is to personalize something and have your own domain, not a shared space on a social media site. I have thought this way ever since I started getting into social media.
This is where the ROI is today!
Social Media -Experience
Here is where the topic gets fuzzy. To effectively be in the game of social media marketing you need your own destination or (Home). However, now social media is creating a new experience…
Google is changing the way you search for results and it is trying to capture the conversation and incorporate it into search.
Facebook understands this and wants people to use the Like system.
Twitter is all about experience. You are either active on Twitter or you are not active on Twitter. It’s all about following the news, information and keeping up with the people you follow.
For companies, Destination is where the ROI is. However, companies are going to need advocates as social media evolves. Companies want a strong “word of mouth” campaign and right now that communication is moving more and more toward social media sites.
Destination and Experience – Two important attributes of Social Media to account for in 2013.
