In my career, it was always pretty evident that upper management took the last week to two weeks off for personal vacation. Their feeling was no one really does business the last two weeks out of the year and you need to be refreshed going into the new year. The rules have changed over the years and in the past three years I have some secured some very large accounts for our company.
Then, there are others who come to work because they used all of their vacation days during the year. These people do not want to be at work and are some of the least productive people. Managers need to do their part and keep these people excited and engaged. Why should employees change if management knows about this attitude and ignores it.
Finally, there are a group of people who have balance. They have families and they celebrate Christmas or other holidays by being together with their families. It is important to take time and be with your family during this special time of the year. In addition, these people seize the time they have at work to finalize their plans for the new year and create excitement. I think it can be a very exciting time of the year and it can be a difference maker for some. If you plan accordingly, you can accomplish quite a bit during these remaining days of the year.
I try to follow successful people and most of the really successful people I follow use this time of year to create something special for the new year. They are the leaders in their respective companies and you can tell that there is a “sense of urgency” with these type of people. I have a lot of fun during this time of year and I have found you can really make a difference at work, in the community and at networking events this time of year because this attitude is so rare.
The end of the world came and went. Now we have the remaining days of 2012. How are you going to use your time? What type of Experience are you planning for? Maximize your time by being with your family and planning some excitement for the new year. Enjoy the moment and don’t get caught up in everyone’s issues. Be respectful, keep praying and remember what this time of year is all about for everyone. For me it’s about the Christmas Celebration.
