Has the newness of all of this technology and social media platforms worn off. I find myself really trying to integrate all of these things together and I think that will be the key to success in 2013.
I am making the huge step to go from learning what all of these technologies and platforms do to actually applying and integrating them in a way that makes more sense from a time standpoint and a revenue standpoint. I think other people are also getting to this point too. For the last few years, we have been hit with new technologies and platforms and it has kept people like myself up at night, because we certainly want to stay ahead of the curve.
I always find it funny when “Experts” say before you start, you have to have a plan and know where your customers are. This is old school. By the time you have your elaborate plan, the technology may have changed and guess what, you are still trying to find your clients. I think the new approach is to do the following:
You have to jump in and start using these tools. I would never call myself an expert, but you really have to know what you are doing before you can do some effective planning. Google does this all the time with their Beta releases. Some tools work and some don’t. Remember Google Wave? Yikes! Look at Google Plus now. It is redefining itself and search all of the time and it is getting better each day as it is integrated into the search experience.
Follow-up with a move back to the basics
I talked about reconnecting with clients last week. It’s all about people and finding the right method to connect with them. This is where I am spending the majority of my time now. I am looking at innovative ways to connect with particular target markets. It starts with defining who the clients are and how to meet their needs. Very soon, I will jump back to the campaign step and track the progress.
Words of Advice
Get started and learn about all of the tools, applications and platforms available to you. I use them everyday! It is the way to conduct business. You don’t need a plan to start.
Learn how the system works. I still hear this phrase, “I just don’t understand that whole Twitter thing” – Don’t wait for some plan to help you understand. In fact a plan is pointless if you do not know how the system works.
Start out by marketing your personal brand and connecting with other great people. Don’t dive in and use your company brand.
