I read an awesome article today that everyone who is on social media should read.
“7 Ways to Value Yourself Beyond Social Media” from Forbes 3/11/2013
Too often people are trying to be someone they are not. People are trying to impress others by calling themselves “experts” in a particular subject or they tell others that they should follow everyone and be everyone’s friend. Would you do this as a person? Would you walk into a store and try to connect with everyone in the store and tell everyone you are an expert in a particular field. Absolutely not! – Why would someone try to recreate this same persona online.
Two things I work on everyday with respect to social media.
1) Connect with only the best. Connect with people you can trust. These connections are the connections you will communicate with on a regular basis and can be some of your best resources.
2) Be real on social media. If you want to earn people’s respect, show people. Show people some knowledge that you believe would add value to others. Show people you care, but be careful to recognize good contacts from bad and/or disturbing contacts.
Read the article referenced above. It is worth the read and add your own comment or two regarding ways you reaffirm your value on social media sites.
