Starting a social media team – Start with content

Social Media TeamI am in the process of getting others involved with social media marketing at our company. I am sure you have heard this phrase before. In the past I have added someone to a Facebook Page or told someone to setup a Twitter Id. These types of approaches have worked with sparing results.

Till now! – After months of looking at ways to incorporate more people into  a social media team, I have finally developed an approach that I believe will have tremendous success. I hope to talk about this process over the next few months.

Today – I leave you with just a few words of advice.  Start with a content management strategy.

As social media evolves, it is becoming apparent that people are generating more and more content on different topics. I really believe this is the focus of a successful content strategy and social media strategy. When the two forces come together, it makes for a more directed approach and it gives people a sense of purpose and ownership in a company. It is very similar to the old position of product manager or service manager. This person is in charge for communicating and engaging people based on a particular product or service.  This needs to happen before any infusion of social media occurs. (Coming in a future post)

I am in the early stages of developing this concept, but I am very excited to roll it out.

I am leaving you with this idea, so you can take it and run with it. The wheels in my brain are quickly turning and I see all kinds of opportunities. I am sure some of you will see the same thing or may be scratching your head a bit. Let me know what you are thinking and maybe I can expand more for.  For now, I want to build on this idea this week and see where it will fit in with respect to planned goals and objectives.

Brent-one thing that’s worked for us for tweeting was creating a Twitter account and then using the free “grouptweet.com”. We wanted something that didn’t mean we all had to remember another username and password and it keeps our @UNL_CropWatch Twitter feed looking fresh with several people tweeting to it. All you do is have everyone tweet from their own accounts and add the @Twitterhandle of your group account to their post. Just an idea in case it would help! Always appreciate your posts!-Jenny
