Identify a spokesperson for the company – Identify one person to be the face/voice of your company especially if you have a company profile. You can have others tweet, but someone needs to always put out a consistent message for people to follow. This is really the key to a successful start and many companies do not do this.
It starts with a blog! – You need to have a blog to get the most out of your Twitter experience. If you want people to connect with you, you need an updated, fresh message that people look forward to reading. Also, there are other side benefits to having a blog, but it really helps you bring people into your site.
Get on everyday at least once a day. Ok – you can take a break once in awhile for a day, but don’t let it slip to more than that. Also, if you post something by 8.00am, you already have your message out there and people will see you. 3-4 times a day is ideal. If you post more than 10 times, you might not have enough work to do.
Know the rules of @reply and Mentions. – I am still amazed how many people do not know this rule and can’t figure out why no one sees their message. Check out more here: What are @replies and mentions?
Know the facts about Retweets. If you are serious about retweets, you should know the rules. For more read this: FAQs about Retweets
Have fun and try to be yourself not someone else. Too many times, people think if they retweet popular people, they, too will be popular. Be yourself and connect with people who you share something in common. Don’t try to connect with everyone.
Its not about total numbers, its about the right numbers. Follow only people you are interested in. If you go to a networking event, you want to connect with your friends and maybe someone you might be interested in learning more about. You wouldn’t hand your business card out to everyone, so why try to connect with everyone on Twitter. Stay away from automated software unless you are purely in it for the numbers. Remember anyone can do this. Be different and show people you have more value in the process.
