Executives and Social MediaThe notion that social media is for the younger generation is a true statement, but I have been fortunate to also see social media cut through the red tape and open dialogue between all levels of management.

If you are an executive and you are still wondering if social media is worth the time or effort, then you are already missing the boat. Social media as I have said before is just another channel that if used properly can help open new doors. Frankly, I’m done making the case for social media.

For me, it is a great leadership tool. In this day, we need more leaders.    The best leaders draw upon the strengths of their workers and their products/services and make the connections with the right people for their products and services.

Here are some ways I use social media to help move our company ahead:

Twitter
Post information each day on various topics affecting our clients. By providing information on a regular basis, I keep in touch with our clients. In addition, I spend more time listening to what is happening with some of our clients, companies and overall industries.   (Listen More, Educate and Inform, Maintain a Presence)

Linkedin

Post information each day on our company Linkedin Page and personally. On Linkedin people are looking to connect with other interesting people. As much as I want people to connect with our company, I know people are much more interested in what others are currently doing. Updating my profile is the key to making sure people know what I am working on. In addition, I read other updates and add comments regarding their information. Each year this platform gets better. (Share something each day, Keep people informed on what you are doing, Stay better informed of people changing positions)

Summary

Twitter and Linkedin are two platforms that can really help executives build a stronger presence both locally and nationally.

Personally, I can tell you that social media has provided the following to me:

  • Connections to other Executives that started on Twitter or Social Media
  • More recognition online for company brand and personal brand
  • More sales as a result of connecting directly with people
  • A way to share company blog information daily with others
  • Staying better connected with clients and advocates
  • Additional clients (added daily)
  • Improves process to reach B2B and B2C clients

It really comes down to an investment of time. No one has a magic book or process for you. You, as an executive need to find your voice and comfort level and use these channels in a way that is reflective of your own personality.
