I came across this article, “8 Core Beliefs of Extraordinary Bosses” by Geoffrey James. It is really a great article about the beliefs of extraordinary bosses.
The following statement from the article mentioned above really struck me.
“Technology offers empowerment, not automation.”
When leaders look at technology from this vantage point, they really start to see technology in a whole new light. Many executives still see technology from an automation standpoint. It is a way to improve processes and lower costs.
I think too much talk is made about the specific technologies today. (mobile, tablets, chips, laptops, macbooks)
The bigger question is how do you use these technologies to empower your employees and clients to develop more company innovation.
Recenlty, our company developed a simple mobile applicatoin for our clients which allowed clients to see their analysis results online for the last 30 days. Since this introduction, we have received numerous requests from clients for additional functionality that could be added to the app. This is where the magic begins. Innovation is created for use and discussion and more people are involved in helping set the tone for future enhancements.
Employees look at technology to enhance communication. Currently work is being planned and discused to use technology to improve communication between people and departments. Imagine being able to use applications like Apple FaceTime to see not only the processes, but the specific people in charge of the process. More dialogue can occur in real-time as opposed to meetings or presentations. (New way of thinking)
Empowerment can only be given to people as the term is defined. Definition: “to give power to (someone)” source Merriam-Webster Dictionary
Give people the tools to make informed decisions faster and smarter. Look for ways to embrace people in the process.
An iPad by itself is useless.
An iPad with some apps is still usesless.
An iPad with a specific app created by people for people is better
An iPad with an app that was designed by people, created for people and used by people should be the goal for success
Technology needs to offer empowerment in order for it to be effective. Are you looking only at technology or are you looking at it as a way to empower people!
