Too often, people get focused on their own specific task or task lists and they forget where their project fits into the grand scheme of things.
To help me to continue to see the big picture, I have turned to drawing more and more on a white board or on a piece of paper. Once I can visualize the tasks in front of me, I can actually see the following:
- relationships taking place
- critical-path relationships
- where people fit in
- the need for improved processes
- the effect on clients
- which tasks will require more resources
Another recource I use is a SWOT Analysis. Strenghts, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Once these items are defined, it makes it much easier to se the big picture.
Big Picture Thinking is needed and it takes some daily practice to really get better at it each day. Companies need visionary people if they are going to be successful.
