I talk with a number of people from other companies to get a perspective on how they see things happening at their companies. One consistent trend I have seen in underperforming companies is the thought processes of their leaders.
Most of the leaders of these companies point to “Past Accomplishments“. They consistently talk about how their “PAST” efforts made all the difference in their company. They consistently bring up examples from “The PAST“, sometimes 10+ years ago.
One of the values I received from my father was an ability to “Forward Think“. What you did yesterday is in the past, you should learn from it and look to the future.
This way of thinking has helped me throughout my career and helps me stay in tune with current client needs. It is critical that companies continue to grow and evolve. Think about all of the changes that have ocurred in the last 10 years. The pace of change is only going to get faster and faster.
My advice to you as an executive. Examine your employees and determine which employees are forward thinkers and which ones are stuck in the past. There is a huge difference. Surround yourself with forward thinking people who are seeking continual improvement of processes and are willing to take on more responsibilities. Also, you will find a number of these employees may not be at the top of your company. Some of them are quietly making a difference at your company. Your job is to recognize them and make sure you are aware of their accomplishments and you value their input.
In addition, make sure you, as an exectuvite set a tone for learning and growing by your example. Share your knowledge with others and continue to align technology with where you want to go in the future.
