MAKING A DIFFERENCE EVERYDAY

Having a presence on every Social Media Site? Really?

social media engagement ringI see a lot of people spending time on social media and desperately trying to be in the game on different platforms.  Since a person has only so much time in a day, what is a person to do. I see a number of people getting stressed about not being able to keep up.  I also see some people taking different approaches to making sure they are being relevant on every site.

Here are some examples: (Are these ways effective? )

Some people schedule their posts on certain sites. (See this a lot on Twitter)

You can usually tell these people because they either post every hour, but hardly ever connect with others or they schedule 5 posts, (tweets) in a row for a certain time.

Other people broadcast their message from one site to other sites. ( Post a Tweet and its sent to Linkedin and Facebook)

So, now you get to read the same messages on different platforms, at the same time.

Other people are hanging out all day on certain sites, answering, liking and plus-sing people’s links.

Trying to understand how these people have so much time in the day to be on social media and don’t have other job duties.

Here is my take on this subject!

If you fall into one of these categories, you might take a step back and evaluate your current practice.  Is your goal to be seen or have a presence?  You are invited to two networking events at the same time for the same duration, one hour.  Do you try to attend both events so people will see you and recognize you or do you decide to attend one event and spend some time with the people at the event.  I take a similar approach to social media sites. Go back and look at your goals and reevaluate the time you are spending and the results you are getting. Take the time to have a game plan and be ready to refine it on a daily basis.

I find that in the morning, a lot of business professionals start their day by going online and checking out information posted on social media sites. You need to have a presence and show people you are alive and well. Check out a few sites and hit those where you have the most customers and contacts. Then spread your message throughout the day on the other sites. People are always looking for something new to break up their day.

I don’t use auto-anything or schedulers. If I have a thought I am going to post it, if I don’t have a thought or time, I will not post it. There are some great scheduling tools, it’s just not my thing.

Now, I do think it is ok to post the same link, like a link to your blog site or a special promotion throughout the day.  No more than 5 times.  Also, it is also good to mix in some old posts occasionally. I don’t believe you have to post some type of information every hour. People will catch on to your schedule and wonder what you are doing during the day.

I don’t worry about making sure  I check in on every social media platform, I have more things to do.

What are your thoughts?
