Like us on FacebookI am sure you have seen these phrases somewhere on company brochures or posts or tweets or walls.

  • Follow US on Twitter
  • Like US on Facebook
  • Connect with US on Linkedin
  • Check-in with US on Foursquare
  • Connect with US on Facebook

Who is US? – Don’t we have this backwards when looking at social media. I thought social media was about connecting and collaborating with clients.

Does this process of  connecting with US really facilitate this whole experience?

People are really starting to see these items for what they really are.. just another advertisement like the daily junk mail we receive.  If your social media strategy is tracking Likes, Connections checkins and followers aren’t you just checking if people are really taking any action by clicking on a link.

What if we changed this approach a little bit and actually invited people to connect with a direct person?  Let’s See what it would look like:

I will use Mark and Mary as company representatives with Company XYZ

Follow US on Twitter

Changed to “I invite you to learn more about Company XYZ’s new product release . on Twitter with  Mark – CEO”

Like US on Facebook

Changed to “Check out our Company Facebook Page –  Every Tuesday at 3.00pm check Company XYZ’s process in the area of manufacturing with Mary – Operations Director”

Connect with US on Linkedin

Changed to ” Every Monday check out the weekly client feedback meeting to see what clients are saying about Company XYZ’s service. Mark, CEO will be posting his summary report”

Check-in with US on Foursquare

Changed to “Every Tuesday night, join others between 6-8pm  for special check-in deals and meet Mary, Owner of Company XYZ”

Connect with US on Facebook

Changed to  “If you are already a Fan of our company Facebook Page, bring and introduce a guest to Mark our CEO and you will receive a special gift.”

Do you see the difference?

It is time for all of us as marketers to moving from “Conecting with US” to “Inviting People to Connect with People”

I have found that just by making this simple change, you will actually get people’s attention a lot more and you will connect with the right people.
