Twitter in BusinessHow has Twitter helped you as a Marketing Director?

Twitter has helped me grow both personally and professionally. Personally, I get to connect with some great resources in Marketing, IT, Blogging, Agriculture, Environmental, Government.  In addition, I am able to look at current target markets and potential markets to see if there would be a good fit for the services my company provides.  In addition, I really listen to industry news. It is very helpful in helping anticipate potential business that may occur quite rapidly because of a national news story.

How often are you on Twitter during a typical day?

I check Twitter about three times a day. I have other job duties, and I manage the time spent on Twitter by utilizing List Columns through the Tweetdeck Applicaiton. (Side-note, I use the Chrome Extension for Tweetdeck. The standalone software uses too much resources for my computer. ) Checking your mention and interaction columns are a must if you want to make connections with people on Twitter.

What is the biggest thing you have learned with respect to your experience on Twitter?

Once you learn how to manage your time on Twitter, it can be a great tool for a variety of reasons. It takes time to learn how to use it effectively and I feel like I’m becoming a better communicator each day.

Do you recommend other Executives use Twitter?

Yes – It is a great listening tool. Also, the power in connections and branding is very powerful both on a local front and a national front. Executives should have an id at a minimum or work closely with someone who is “the face of their company”.  People connect with people more than they do company brands.

What applications do you use with Twitter?

I have tried several tools. I really like Tweetdeck for my Personal Computer, Twitter for the iPhone when sending out tweets.

As far as gauging Twitter Traffic – Google Analytics and Tweetstats

Tweetstats  really gives you a good picture of how often you tweet, what is popular and the information can be useful in determining ROI. (It’s Free)

Any final advice?

Keep things simple and you see so much more. Get your follower count up to 1,000 and don’t follow more than 1,000. Connect only with the best and you will have the best experience on Twitter.  It takes time  and each day people are learning how to effectively incorporate Twitter into their business processes.
