I have been struggling with where to spend my time:
- Do I re-engineer all of may online pages to make them key-word rich, (SEO) or should I focus on seeking out new content and adding new information through blogs and other medium.
- Should I buy advertisements and try to get on people’s screens?
- Should I get my site mobile friendly or build a new one?
I am not alone on this one. Read this article, An Owner Rethinks How He Spends His Marketing Dollars – New York Times Blog, March 15, 2013 – It gives a good perspective of how we think as marketers and how we are trying different marketing techniques to help our businesses.
It’s about clients
It really comes back to clients. This is where it has to start. I was reminded of this important piece and it really does help put things in perspective.
Where are my clients? Who are my clients? What are my goals? How do I know if I am experiencing success or not?
Get outside of your market and see how others are using marketing techniques
The talk is always to make sure you know your own market. Yes, this is the key, but I have found that by studying other industries from an outside perspective, I am able to pickup on trends and “hot topics”. It also helps me look at what information is valuable and how people are finding this information.
Check out your Google Analytics
Look for patterns on a day to day business. What “keywords” are resonating with people? What devices are they using to find your site? Where are the majority of your hits coming from. Also, don’t be afraid to use other analytical tools. I like GetClicky.
Test some offers
This has been a real eye-opener for me. I am really seeing people open to offers and the click-through-rate has been great. By the way I am using my own offers and promoting them organically and not through some paid advertising service. It can be done.
Create a plan to allocate time and resources
This is really the difference-maker. Once you go through this process, it will be evident where you can get the best return on your time and investment. I hope to write more about this in an upcoming post. I have some ideas I am currently testing and I am finding some startling information. More to come.
