Are you hanging out at the lake or swimming pool this time of year? Are you taking an extended vacation this time of year. That’s ok, but if you are not careful, your competition could be using this time of year to quitely take clients from you.
I think this is the biggest issue for business’s this time of year. The summer is in the fourth quarter, families are taking vacations and also making preparations for the upcoming school year. First day of school is August 12, 2013 in this part of the country. It is the time when people feel they have a right to relax and take some time off.
I wrote a piece yesterday about “Making a Difference – A Daily Task” This subject is really sticking with me and I think it is really holds the key to businesses being successful in the second half of the year. When I worked in the corporate world, there was typically higher earnings the second quarter and people were in good moods. I think there are a number of reasons for this. As summer approaches, people do warm up to the summer and look forward to getting outside. Also, a lot of transactions typically happen during the April-June time frame. After June, people take a breather, and some take an extended time off and forget that a business needs to keep going.
This summer I made it a goal to turn up the markeitng and promotions more, especially in June and July. The result of that effort was a higher return in new accounts and sample volumes, (record high number of samples received July 5, 2013) This was a holiday for most companies. My point here is that if you get your marketing efforts together and offer promotions and other quality information when others may be taking time off, you may be able to gain more clients away from your competitors, especially during these summer months.
My advice to you is get focused and find ways to get noticed more during these so-called off-times. In business can you really afford to have an off-time. I am not saying you can’t have a vacation, but make sure you have put yourself in a position to keep your marketing efforts going and maybe rethink about taking two weeks off and take a day or two off. Your clients may not even realize your are gone if you put the right support system in place.
You still have some time before school is out. Try setting up your own promotion or social media campaign and see if you see similar results. In the end you might find people like yourself who are also trying to improve their businesses and could use your products or services. The only way you will know is if you get your information out in front of them.
