I came across a great article on this topic, “Marketing Trend for 2014: Smaller Messaging Has a Big Impact” by Ann Handley, November 19, 2013 in Entrepreneur Magazine.
“The new word in content marketing is small” – I won’t repeat the article, but it’s no surprise to many of you that companies are looking to short content whether it is on Twitter, Vine or Instagram”
Basically, people have a lot of short term memory and are constantly bombarded by information all day long that really the only information that stands out is “short bits of information” that make us take some sort of action like the following:
- Bookmark the idea
- Retweet the idea or concept
- Get us excited for a second
- Make us laugh
- Make us Cry
- Something that can repeated
I think today, so much is made about marketing tools and more emphasis needs to be made on the approach and creating a reaction. Information is only good if some type of reaction takes place. I tend to think of billboards that I see on my drive to work. However, when I get to work, I barely remember any of these messages. I think the same is true with our content online.
Somehow, someway, we as marketers need to work harder to keep our messages short, simple and remembered. The first two are easy, the last one is the kicker!
How are you addressing this topic? Have you found some methods that work?It might be an area to consider in 2014.
