In the past we talked about our products and services and value. This information was placed
in great art, graphics and slick designed books and brochures. It was all about art, style and eye-catching attention.
Today – It is all about creating newsworthy information. What is your company doing that is so great that people would want to know more about. Is there something new, different or earthshaking that people want to know about. Think about the news…Today, you want that special report, breaking news, (this one is overused a bit). That one
piece of information that sparks discussion or a future conversation.
Social media is providing us with the channels to get this information out to others. Twitter is all about broadcasting the latest, coolest information. The best part about twitter is if you write great content, it will be shared again and again with others.
This really is where the engagement takes place.
Create Editorial Content
It is important to have an opinion. Too many people simply share other people’s work but do not state why they like, plus or retweet something. All of us, including myself need to get better at this step. If you like an article you read and someone shared it with you, start a new line of discussion.
Give credit to the person sharing the information, also the author and then add a simple reason why you liked the article or disliked the article if you feel you have a good reason. (I tend to error on the side of being positive) Do people really share a lot of articles that they do not like or disagree with? Who wants to connect with that type of person?
Taking the News Concept farther
There are many ways to take this concept even farther:
- Share pictures
- Create videos
- Create a news/blog site
- Video conferencing
- Tours of your facility
The key is to start working toward this type of mentality. It’s not as easy as you think it might be, but if you look at social media from this point of view, you will be looking at it more from a client perspective and you will begin to see that great content combined with a newsworthy perspective will help your company’s message get more exposure.
